Primary Purpose of Organization Unit:
The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) provides comprehensive legal advice and assistance to The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. OGC provides these services on University matters to the UNC Pembroke Board of Trustees, the principal administrators of the University, and through them, to the faculty, staff, and student government of UNC Pembroke. OGC advises the University concerning the legal implications of proposed policies and actions, counsels the University as to compliance with state and federal laws and administrative regulations, drafts or reviews University contracts, and coordinates legal aspects of the University's real, personal, and intellectual property interests. The Office of the General Counsel is a section of the Chancellor's Office.

Primary Purpose of Position:
The Associate General Counsel and Clery Compliance Coordinator's (AGC/CC) purpose is to provide legal advice to academic and administrative offices across campus; review, draft, and negotiate university contracts; and draft legal documents and memoranda of law. The AGC/CC reviews and coordinates any necessary updates to the university's Clery Act related policies and regulations. In partnership with the Clery Act Compliance Committee, reviews and distributes the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report and ensures that it is completed in accordance with relevant laws and policies. The AGC/CC also assists with matters of compliance with state and federal law; reviews university policies and conducts trainings on those polices; and oversees grievance proceedings. The AGC will report to the General Counsel.

Job Description:
The Associate General Counsel (AGC) reports directly to the General Counsel. The AGC will provide legal advice in a fast-paced environment to a variety of academic and administrative offices across campus. The AGC will review, draft and negotiate university contracts; research legal issues; draft legal documents and memoranda of law for attorney use; provide support in responding to discovery requests and investigations by regulatory agencies; assist in coordination of compliance with various state and federal laws and regulations; develop special studies on a variety of legal issues and policy matters; reviews university policies and regulations; handle grievance proceedings; and, as needed, conduct training for various campus constituencies on university policies and regulations and matters that may expose the university to legal vulnerability.

Management Preference:
Experience in contract review, drafting, and modification; knowledge of education law; knowledge of laws regulating activities of agencies of the State of North Carolina.
