Course Title: ENGL 321 ­ FUNDAMENTALS OF READING AND WRITING

Course Description:
This is a basic reading and writing course emphasizing sentence structure and sentence variety, grammar and usage, the development of focused paragraphs, summary writing, study skills, and reading sills and strategies.

Course Title: ENGL 301 ­ INTRODUCTION TO ACADEMIC READING AND WRITING

Course Description:
This reading and writing course strengthens reading skills and strategies, including active reading, annotating, and summarizing. It also strengthens writing skills and strategies, such as thesis statement composition, essay development, and editing for repetition and redundancy. ENGL 301 prepares students for ENGL 111. Writing requirement: 4,000 words.

Course Title: ENGL 111 ­ INTERMEDIATE ACADEMIC READING AND WRITING

Course Description:
This reading and writing course prepares students for ENGL 1A. It introduces students to critical reading with emphasis on reading skills and strategies for improved comprehension and on critical reading skills and strategies for purposes of analysis, comparison, and judgment. It also teaches mastery of the basic principles of exposition and syntax. Students write 500­word essays, and they read essays and articles that stimulate analytical thinking and writing, at times integrating what they've read with what they write. WRITING REQUIREMENT: A minimum of 4,000 words; journal writing may also be required. Also offered online.

Course Title: ENGL 1A ­ COLLEGE COMPOSITION

Course Description:
This is an introductory course that offers instruction in expository and argumentative writing, appropriate and effective use of language, close reading, cogent thinking, research strategies, information literacy, and documentation. Also offered online.

Course Title: ENGL 2 ­ ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING AND CRITICAL THINKING

Course Description:
This course offers instruction in argumentation and critical writing, critical thinking, analytical evaluation of texts, research strategies, information literacy, and proper documentation.


EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

POSITION DEFINITION:
Under the general supervision of the Division or Department Chair, the adjunct instructor will provide instruction in accordance with course descriptions, outlines, class schedules, and Governing Board policy; evaluate progress of students concerning educational matters, and perform other instructional related duties as assigned. Instructor may be assigned to the Monterey campus and/or Marina Education Center.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Meet each scheduled class and teach or conduct learning exercises for the entire period.
Contact the appropriate division chair or administrator in advance to make arrangements for unavoidable absences.
Provide each student at the beginning of the course with written information about the course, to include a full description of the grading system and how the student will be evaluated.
Accurately keep required class records on attendance, withdrawal and grading.
Submit when due, all necessary reports such as attendance and grade reports, roll books, and class information sheets, and certify as to their accuracy.
Comply with all institutional policies and procedures.
Give careful attention to all bulletins, memorandums and emails from administrative offices.
Check faculty mailbox and MPC email frequently.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR
Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND master's degree in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism OR
The equivalent. Applicant must submit equivalency form.

AND

Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Teaching assignments are part­time and temporary in nature. Assignments are subject to Governing Board approval, adequate enrollment size, and assignment to a contract instructor.

Hourly Rate: $44.44 ­ $58.80 (per classroom teaching hour) based on education.
