IT Project Manager

Job Summary

Technical Project Manager III


Establish project teams and provide overall direction for technical projects from initiation through to delivery. Perform project requirements, estimation, and budget management. Formulate project scope and delivery strategies and establish milestones/schedules. Maintain and report project status and monitor progress of all team members. Gather required data from end-users to evaluate objectives, goals, and scope to create technical specifications. Serve as liaison between technical and non-technical departments in order to ensure that all targets and requirements are met. Keep leadership informed of key issues that may impact project completion, budget, or other results.

About UIT: University Information Technology (UIT), the central IT service provider for the University of Utah, reports to the U's Chief Information Officer and is responsible for many of the U's shared IT services including the wired and wireless network; Campus Information Services (CIS) portal; UMail, telephone, and online collaboration; digital learning technologies; information security; software licensing; and a host of other IT systems and services.

Responsibilities
Technical Project Manager III
Leads planning and implementation of assigned projects.
Coordinates and/or facilitates project kick-off meetings, workshops, and other meeting formats within the scope of the project.
Defines project plans including scope, tasks, resources, schedules, budgets, risks, etc.
Tracks project deliverables and monitors budget expenditures using standard project management tools.
Continuously monitors and reports on progress and quality activities of the project to all stakeholders.
Implements and manages project change management, risk management and mitigation actions to achieve project success.
Performs appropriate project closure that includes evaluation, assessment of results and closure documents.
Lead, coach and motivate project team members on a proactive basis.

Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Technical Project Managers, III: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.


Preferences
3+ years of experience with cross-functional IT projects.
Progressively more responsible experience with IT projects of moderate to high complexity.
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Business Administration, Engineering or related discipline.
Experience with predictive (i.e., waterfall) and familiar with adaptive (i.e., agile) methods.
Experience with Higher Education.
