Full-Time Instructor - Tenure-Track 10-Month Position
The Natural Sciences Division at Pasadena City College (PCC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Chemistry Instructor commencing with the 2026-2027 academic year. The teaching responsibility is for Chemistry classes that serve both STEM majors and non-STEM majors, as well as allied health majors. We welcome candidates from all areas of specialization in Chemistry. Assignments may include teaching at both the main campus and off-site locations, with schedules that may occur Monday through Saturday, including mornings and evenings, based on student and program needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CHEMISTRY INSTRUCTOR:

  • Teaches classes in one or more of the following Chemistry classes: Introductory Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, General Organic and Biochemistry, and Environmental Chemistry.
  • Participates in professional development activities that support best practices for teaching a diverse population of both major and non-major students.
  • Participates in the evaluation, revision, and development of the curriculum.
  • Participates in the recruitment, outreach, and development of internship opportunities for students.
  • Participates with faculty to develop and assess student learning outcomes. Use the results to improve teaching and learning.
  • Undertakes the divisional and professional responsibilities of a regular faculty member.
  • Participates in divisional and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities.
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

  • Experience and proficiency in current teaching and learning techniques.
  • Background necessary to teach all levels of Chemistry, including Preparatory Chemistry, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Chemistry for allied health majors.
  • Ability to adapt varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of students with differing learning modalities and abilities.
  • Knowledge of learning management systems such as Canvas.
  • Experience with Student Learning Outcomes and assessment methods.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and other members of the campus community.
  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic environment with students of varying academic preparation and learning styles.
  • Knowledgeable about culturally sustaining pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging African American, Latinx, and Indigenous groups who are historically underrepresented and underserved.
  • Recent experience working with minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education shapes patterns of participation and outcomes.
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop curriculum and assessments independently and in collaboration with colleagues.





MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Chemistry

OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry AND a Master's degree in Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Physics, Physics, Molecular Biology, or Geochemistry
OR
  • Valid California Community College Instructor Credential in Chemistry

OR

  • The equivalent - Degree must be shown as conferred on transcript. Some degrees may require equivalency. When equivalency is requested, the file will be reviewed by PCC's Equivalency Committee. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide ample documentation to support equivalent qualifications.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Enthusiasm for teaching.
  • Experience in teaching chemistry at the community college level (or comparable) to a diverse student body, the majority of which are traditionally underrepresented in the sciences.
  • Experience in developing and using student-centered lower division chemistry curriculum based on high impact practices to increase student success and completion for students at all levels of college-readiness.
  • Experience developing curricula that incorporate anti-racist pedagogy, high-impact practices, and effective assessment techniques.
  • Experience with cross-disciplinary approaches to teaching, particularly those that emphasize social justice issues and civic engagement.
  • Experience working collaboratively on curriculum development.
  • Experience engaging students through student-centered and innovative instructional approaches such as project-based learning, community-based learning, and contextualized learning.
  • Up-to-date experience and/or training in course management systems and online instruction.




THE ASSIGNMENT:

Ten Month, 100% - Tenure-track position beginning August, 2026.

Thirty-four (34) hours per week consisting of a combination of in-class teaching and preparation for teaching; five and one half (5.5) hours of additional time for student conferences; and five and one half (5.5) hours for professional growth and development, College governance and other professional responsibilities. The College has two 16-week semesters and offers a full range of courses beginning at 7:00 a.m. and ending at 11:00 p.m. Faculty must be available to teach anytime within those hours. Faculty may be offered the opportunity to teach classes during winter and summer intersessions.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Successful completion of live scan clearance and TB screening.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109.
  • Meeting applicable eligibility requirements under CalPERS or CalSTRS if you are a current or former member.
  • Board of Trustees approval.
