The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training and internal pay comparison. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

The Executive Director of Design (EDD), reporting to the Associate VP for Planning, Design & Construction (PDC) in Campus Planning & Operations (CPO) will be an important part of the PDC leadership team and will steward excellent design at BU to supports the institutions academic mission, research endeavors, and campus life experience. The EDD will bring an expertise in institutional and campus design, sustainability, and historic stewardship. The ability to be creative, strategic, and engaging with a diverse range of colleagues, stakeholders (internal and external), and members of the BU community is critical. The ideal candidate brings diplomacy and discernment and will develop and manage architectural design standards in conjunction with our construction guidelines that establish design excellence at BU. Strong oral and written communication skills are required. The EDD will sit on and lead various committees related to campus design and will be an important source of advice to University Leadership and the CPO team. Working closely with the Executive Director of Planning and the AVP for Annual Capital Projects will be an essential responsibility to ensure projects are delivered seamlessly from initiation through completion and close-out. The EDD will be a resource to the full PDC team on all design-related efforts and will provide leadership and guidance to our professional team of designers and project managers, as well as oversee the direct management of select projects. Oversight and support for design efforts will range from small projects, interior design, and large capital projects. Projects will include major construction, renovation, alterations, and repairs to address asset renewal, deferred maintenance, and infrastructure-related projects. The successful candidate will provide value and excellence through design that is balanced with sustainability, operational efficiency, and meets financial priorities. This position will oversee the selection of external architects and consultants.
Required Skills
Experience required: Registered Architect license Bachelors degree in architecture Masters Degree in design-related field Minimum 12 years experience working in an institutional setting with design and with construction project teams. Minimum 8 years of demonstrated leadership. LEED, Phius, WELL, or Fitwell sustainability credential preferred. Familiarity with these programs is required. Skills / Abilities Required: Excellent leadership, interpersonal, team, and collaborative skills Demonstrated success in architectural design within institutional campus settings with the ability to analyze and evaluate architectural designs, master plans, and physical planning studies for aesthetic and technical clarity.
