Assistant Director of Community Standards


Empire State University currently seeks applicants for a full-time Assistant Director of Community Standards. The Assistant Director of Community Standards plays a vital role in fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment that supports student success and personal development. Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Experience, this position provides leadership for the university's student conduct and academic integrity processes, ensuring that all cases are managed with fairness, consistency, and respect for student rights and due process.

The Assistant Director serves as the university hearing officer for student conduct matters and provides guidance to faculty, staff, and students regarding university policies, student rights and responsibilities, and conflict resolution. This position is also responsible the administration of the university's academic integrity process, including case management, hearing coordination, documentation, and communication with students and faculty.

Recognizing that not all student concerns involve policy violations, the Assistant Director partners with faculty and staff to address behavioral concerns through consultation, coaching, restorative practices, and other educational interventions designed to promote student growth and prevent escalation. The position develops behavioral support strategies, facilitates conflict resolution when appropriate, and works collaboratively across the university to create opportunities for learning, accountability, and positive behavior change.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Investigate, adjudicate, and resolve alleged violations of the Student Conduct Code, ensuring fair, consistent, and educational outcomes that uphold due process and university policy.
  • Coordinate and manage the university's academic integrity process, including case review, hearing administration, documentation, communication with students and faculty, and implementation of hearing outcomes.
  • Recruit, train, and coordinate members of the Student Conduct and Academic Integrity Hearing Committees, ensuring annual training and ongoing professional development.
  • Ensure that all hearing members are trained on annual basis.
  • Develop and deliver training workshops and presentations on topics related to community standards, student conduct, academic integrity, and de-escalation.
  • Assist Executive Director of Student Experience in seeking resolution to escalated student concerns.
  • Analyze trends in student conduct and academic integrity, prepare assessment reports, and recommend policy, process, and educational improvements that support student success and institutional effectiveness.
  • Utilize university technology systems, including Maxient, to manage student conduct and academic integrity cases, maintain accurate and confidential case records, document communications and outcomes, and support consistent processes, reporting, and compliance with university policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respectful communication when dealing with students and colleagues around sensitive issues.
  • Partner with colleagues in the Office of Student Experience to streamline student leadership training and development, work with club leaders and officers to create a community of respect, and serve as an integral member of the Student Experience team to ensure students are engaged in civil discourse and professional development.
  • Serve as point of contact for student conduct and academic integrity matters in the absence of the Executive Director.


Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, human resources, or related fields.
  • A minimum of three years relevant experience with student conduct, or academic integrity hearings.
  • Strong understanding of due process and fundamental fairness for students in higher education setting.
  • Ability to analyze, mediate, and resolve complex problems.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks.
  • Experience with assessment and reporting trends.
  • Evidence of relationship-building.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Evidence of ability to communicate, engage, and develop rapport with individuals of diverse cultural, social, linguistic, and religious backgrounds and varied age, gender, and sexual orientation.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience working in a student conduct office.
  • Experience with Ellucian's Banner, Maxient, or other data management and communication technology.
  • Experience working in online learning environment.
  • Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English.
  • Prior knowledge of and experience in working with bilingual and emergent bilingual learners, particularly in online settings.


Special Information

  • Occasional travel to university locations across New York State may be required to fulfill department, division, and university-wide commitments.
  • May require occasional evening and/or weekend obligations in accordance with student and university needs.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. VISA sponsorship is not available for this position.

Rank/Salary: Senior Staff Assistant, SL3 / $65,000-$74,000, dependent upon experience and qualifications.
