The University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Biology. We seek individuals working broadly in cell biology, and/or physiology whose research addresses the development and function of organisms. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, the cellular basis of physiological function, cellular responses to environmental stresses, and the cell biology of organisms in natural or human-altered settings. We are especially interested in candidates whose work connects cellular mechanism and physiology to organismal development, function and, more broadly, to ecological or evolutionary processes. The search is open to individuals working in any experimental system.

We are a collaborative and interactive community of faculty and students with broad research interests spanning molecular and cellular biology, structural biology, ecology, evolutionary biology, and mathematical and computational biology. The Department maintains an integrated research and educational program across all basic biological sciences and has a vision plan emphasizing Life in its Natural Context. Our department is housed within the School of Arts & Sciences, one of 12 schools on a single interconnected campus, and affiliations with other departments in Arts & Sciences or in other schools (e.g., Engineering & Applied Sciences, Medicine, or Veterinary Medicine) are common. Interdisciplinary research is supported by the breadth of academic pursuits at Penn and the proximity of resources on our contiguous green urban campus in Philadelphia. Departmental and University resources supporting our mission include the Offices of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Vice Provost for Research, the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Innovation, the Penn Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, and Wellness at Penn.

Review of applications will begin October 15, 2026 and continue until the position has been filled. The appointment is expected to begin July 1, 2027.

Qualifications

a Ph.D. or equivalent degree is expected at the start of the appointment
evidence of a consistent record of strong independent research
a strong capacity for teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels
mentoring and support of a diverse student body
ability to direct graduate and undergraduate research
