The mission of Pierce College is to create quality educational opportunities for a diverse community of learners to thrive in an evolving world.

The Director of Student Life and Engagement has primary responsibility for strategic and administrative leadership, development, and budgetary operation for all student retention programs, activities, and events of the Associated Students of Pierce College District Fort Steilacoom and Puyallup student funded programs, and chartered student clubs and organizations.

Responsibilities include providing leadership and management for student government, student activities with strategic day-to-day leadership, direction, supervision, and additional support for grant and equity empowerment programs in the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion College Access, Retention, and Engagement Services (EDI CARES) Office. The director will be responsible for training and developing equity-minded and socially conscious leadership opportunities for all Student Life professionals and student staff. The director will facilitate these objectives through participation in structured leadership programs; providing access for all students to quality out-of-classroom programs and activities for instructionally related programs; Implementing and supporting programs and activities that serve to enhance both the campus and community environments, and to encourage collaborative and socially conscience relationships within the campus community and the Pierce College service district; supporting the College faculty, staff, and community members; providing for the development and evaluation of departmental objectives, the evaluation of professional and student staff, and the implementation of college policies and procedures. Directors provide leadership for their individual campus office and collaborate to coordinate districtwide student leadership trainings, programming, budget, and retention services for a district student life presence of empowerment and solidarity throughout the student journey. This position reports to the Dean for Student Equity Design and Engagement in EDI CARES.

  • Takes a lead role in representing Pierce College leadership with strategic planning efforts, to include on-going program and services reviews.

  • Works to sustain efforts for continual assessment and improvement.

  • Identifies ongoing department needs, including equipment, space, staff, training and professional development opportunities, and other resources.

  • Collaborate and coordinate districtwide Student Life engagement programs, trainings, budget planning, and onboarding of student leaders in districtwide.

  • Provides direct supervision to the department staff, and student government leadership program.


  • Collaborate as Student Life directors to assure district and individual campus fiscal accountability of the Services and Activities Fee Budget, Technology fees, and Capital Project fees by advising student government in the development of its annual budget; monitors expenditures and budget summary reports.

  • Provides campus fiscal accountability for developing and maintaining a balanced budget and managing expenditures according to established college and OFM procedures.

  • Contributes to the retention of state property by serving as inventory custodian for student owned equipment.

  • Assumes fiscal management for operational and revenue budgets supporting Student Programs.

Legacy of Excellence Retention and Engagement Services:

  • Collaborate as district directors alongside with EDI CARES to implement Legacy of Excellence (LOE) student leadership development for all student leaders.

  • Provide equitable learning opportunities for historically underrepresented students utilizing LOE through student engagement programming.

  • Provide enhanced retention support services in coordination with EDI CARES to ensure students are connected to appropriate resources.

  • Coordinate and collaborate equitable engagement activities with EDI CARES empowerment programs to support students from marginalized and disenfranchised populations.

  • Ensures that literature and resources are available that addresses a wide variety of wellness issues.

  • Schedules agencies to bring to campus the local resources and publicizes their presence on campus. Maintains a comprehensive list of local resources to include food, shelter, health services, and domestic violence relief and recovery programs.

Student Government:

  • Provides for the ongoing operation of the student government association by recruiting students to participate in student government; organizes and provides regular, ongoing leadership training activities; services as a liaison between student government and administration, faculty and classified staff; attends student government meetings and related forums; and provides ongoing leadership and guidance to students.

  • Develops and continuously evaluates for improvement for a comprehensive program of student clubs and organizations by promoting the opportunities available, identifies faculty and staff members to serve as club advisors, establishes an inter-club council to ensure leadership and guidance, assists clubs/organizations in the development of annual budgets; and train officers and faculty advisors to follow approved budgetary procedures.

  • Oversees the constitution and bylaws review process, ensuring documentation is current and reflects appropriate guidelines and standards.

Student Activities:

  • Supervises the recruitment, selection and training of students.

  • Assures effective administration and management of student sponsored activities to meet the educational, social, recreational and cultural needs of the diverse student populations.

  • Collaborate with district student programs and activities and with EDI CARES empowerment programs to coordinate a district calendar of events and activities on a coordinated and consistent basis.

Student Center:

  • Provides for the scheduling and set-up for all events in the Student Center, billing/budgeting, maintaining equipment inventory, motor pool operations, and supervising part-time staff.

  • Monitors the physical condition of the department facilities, vehicles, and initiates maintenance requests.


Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree: Education, Social Sciences, Business, or any related field.

Required Experience:

  • At least two years comparable experience working with students of diverse backgrounds, preferably with community college students.

  • Experience with student program design, engagement, personnel supervision, evaluation in a post-secondary setting desired.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated appropriate depth of knowledge and skills in areas of responsibility.

  • Strong positive interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively, demonstrate trust and sensitivity to and mutual respect of others, and problem solve.

Terms of Employment:
Each position is a full-time administrative-exempt position assigned to either Pierce College Fort Steilacoom campus or Pierce College Puyallup campus. Frequent travel to Pierce College campuses or other sites will occur. Standard work hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours required. These positions may be subject to reassignment between campuses or sites.

Salary & Benefits:
Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Annual base salary placement will be between $73,344.00 - $87,314.00. However, your paycheck is just part of the total compensation package. There is an outstanding benefits package which is worth an additional value equivalent to about 30% of your salary. Physical Work Environment:
Each position works indoors in an office environment. During this time, core staff approved by their supervisors to come onto campus are covered by a safety plan that follows social distancing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocols. This includes minimizing close contact by limiting time on campus; conducting meetings virtually; and implementing other creative strategies to reduce the density of employees on campus to keep everyone safe.
