Job Description
The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Building Automation System Supervisor for the Facilities Maintenance Services Department. This position is responsible for planning and directing Building Automation System operations, establishing short- and long-term operational goals, and ensuring the reliable, secure, and compliant performance of building automation systems that support campus facilities.
Duties include (but are not limited to):
- Plan, implement and monitor all Building Automation System (BAS) activities
- Serve as Systems, Network, and Database Administrator for the UNR main campus BAS and the Database Administrator for the UNR Residential Life BAS
- Organize and monitor the unit's routine, project, and emergency work and communicate plan, coordinate tasks, and monitor progress against deadlines
- Establish preventative maintenance schedules
- Manage contracts and serve as Project Manager including contract negotiations, requests for qualifications, request for proposals; ensure compliance with contract requirements and safety
- Serve as liaison for capital improvement and system modernization projects
- Evaluate and make technical recommendations regarding equipment configurations and software for critical systems
- Ensure compatibility across multiple generations of assets
- Supervise staff and provide ongoing feedback to employees regarding performance, conduct, and attendance; conduct performance reviews and develop Work Performance Standards
- Facilitate teamwork and encourage growth and self-development
- Maintain proper confidentiality of personnel matters and address conflict
- Maintain security and access for the BAS; set and administer security policies
- Establish real-time device visibility and comprehensive risk management
- Conduct routine audits of hardware, software, and processes to identify deficiencies or breaches; assess common vulnerabilities
- Remain current, understand, and implement state and federal rules and regulations and agency policies and procedures; build a culture of compliance and completion
- Follow proper protocols when Investigating accidents, incidents, or rule infractions; report infractions to the chain of command
- Assume fiscal responsibility for unit and manage budgets at approved levels;
- Purchase supplies per guidelines and monitor vendor pricing to purchase low price goods; ensure adequate inventory and stock critical spares
- Recommend projects, labor and material acquisitions to further unit goals; and
- Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications
- This position requires graduation from high school or equivalent education and five (5) years of experience including one (1) year of advanced programming such as fault detection diagnostics or programming complex building automation systems such as large mechanical systems (e.g., central energy plants, chiller loops) and commissioning, validating, and calibrating building automation systems assets; one year of experience training and coordinating the work of others; OR
- Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, management information systems, construction, engineering, occupational safety, or related field and four (4) years of experience as described above; OR
- One (1) year of experience as a Building Automation System Specialist III in Nevada State service; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above
A valid Class "C" driver's license or higher operator's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
The following items must be obtained within 12 months of hire:
- Manufactures Certification of Building Automation Networking Basics
- Manufactures Certification of Building Automation Programming
- Manufactures Certification of Building Automation Operation and Troubleshooting
- OSHA 30-Hour Card
- NFPA 70e
Physical Demands
This position requires working with and arounds hazardous building materials containing asbestos and solvents; frequent lifting, climbing, moving and installing, many in awkward or high locations; and exposure to hot and cold temperatures when working outside.
This position requires walking or standing to a significant degree and pushing and/or pulling; exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move object.
This position requires the ability to see, hear, and communicate through speech.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with substantial experience with Automated Logic software are encouraged to apply.
Schedule
The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs. This position may be able to elect an alternative work schedule.
This position rotates through regularly scheduled standby duty requiring the ability to respond to campus emergencies 24 hours per day/seven days per week.
This position is part of the Facilities Services Weather Essential Personnel and may be required to report to work for their regularly scheduled shift without any phone/cell phone notification; and is subject to a variable workweek schedule.
This position is designated as Essential Personnel. In the event of a campus emergency, special event, closure to maintain campus safety or building operations, this position may be required to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
Compensation Grade
Grade 38
In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate's qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
