POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Vice President (AVP) & Director of Athletics provides executive leadership and establishes the long-term vision and strategic direction for California State University, Bakersfield's NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program. Reporting to the President for strategic direction, with a dotted-line relationship to the Vice President for Business and Administrative Services/CFO for operational activities, the AVP/Director is responsible for the overall success and comprehensive administration of athletics programs, facilities, and services to ensure student-athlete success, wellbeing, and equity. The position oversees the development and execution of a multi-million-dollar budget, serves as the primary ambassador for CSUB Athletics, and advises executive leadership on intercollegiate athletics, institutional strategy, legislative changes, and risk management.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Athletics Administration & Strategic Planning:
  • Provide strategic leadership for all NCAA Division I athletics programs, facilities, and support services.
  • Ensure compliance with CSU, NCAA, Title IX, and conference regulations.
  • Lead institutional strategy regarding NIL, revenue sharing, and the evolving intercollegiate athletics landscape.
  • Promote student-athlete academic success, wellbeing, leadership development, and career preparation.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan aligned with the University's mission.
  • Establish measurable goals for competitiveness, fundraising, student success, and community engagement.
  • Advise University leadership on national trends, conference realignment, governance, and legislative changes.

Outreach & Revenue Generation:
  • Build relationships with alumni, donors, corporate partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Partner with University Advancement to develop comprehensive fundraising and revenue-generation strategies.
  • Serve as the chief ambassador for CSUB Athletics.
  • Increase visibility through marketing, media relations, and community outreach.
  • Strengthen relationships with the NCAA and conference partners.

Budget & Fiscal Responsibility:
  • Oversee the department's multi-million-dollar operating and capital budgets.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial policies and reporting requirements.
  • Manage revenue sources including fundraising, sponsorships, ticket sales, fees, and conference distributions.
  • Provide regular financial reporting and analysis to University leadership.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and at least ten (10) years of progressive administrative experience in intercollegiate athletics, including direct oversight of multiple sports programs and staff. Experience should also include knowledge of fiscal management and a demonstrated record of multi-million dollar fundraising, donor cultivation, or revenue generation for athletics. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

LICENSES - Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in sports administration, business administration, education, or related field.
  • Experience leading an NCAA Division I athletics department through significant industry transformation.
  • Demonstrated success securing transformational gifts and capital support.
  • Experience collaborating with presidents, governing boards, and cabinet leadership.
  • Experience as an Athletics Director or senior Division I athletics administrator.
  • Strategic planning, facilities management, conference governance, and customer-service oriented leadership.

COMPENSATION: This appointment is in the Management Personnel Plan and is a full-time, 12-month position. The pay basis is monthly.

CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE: $21,667 - $24,167

However, offer amount will be commensurate with candidate's experience, education, skills, and training

CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE: $10,106 - $32,441

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

BACKGROUND CHECK: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Education Code 89521 Requirements: Applicants will be required to disclose whether they have received a final administrative decision or final judicial decision determining that they have committed sexual harassment within the last seven years only after a determination is made that they meet the minimum qualifications for the position, and before an offer of employment is extended. MANDATED REPORTER: The person holding this position is considered a limited mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083, revised July 21, 2017.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST: A "designated position" in the CSU's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
