GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the Fitness & Wellness Manager, the Fitness & Wellness Supervisor assists with the administration and coordination of a comprehensive fitness and instructional class program. The Fitness & Wellness Supervisor assists with recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and supervising all fitness and instructional class staff. Responsibilities include supporting the Fitness, Wellness, and Instructional Class Programs including daily operations, staff management, fiscal management, risk management, policies and procedures, facility management, scheduling and event planning, marketing and promotions, strategic planning, and program assessment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary Functions

  • Assists with the effective planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of all Fitness and Wellness programs including but not limited to: group fitness classes, personal training, instructional activity classes, orientations and wellness programs
  • Recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates program assistants and instructors
  • Coordinates and programs the Fitness, Wellness, and Instructional Class schedule for each semester and break period
  • Coordinates program assistant(s) schedules/tasks on a weekly and daily basis
  • Plans staff meetings on a semester basis; disseminates necessary information to staff
  • Uses Virtual EMS to reserve facilities for activities, classes and events
  • Uses Virtual CMS to input class schedules and programming on website
  • Uses Fusion to create Fitness, Wellness, and Instructional Classes and input class details for participant registration
  • Designs and distributes program surveys on a semester basis and compiles data
  • Ensures customer service standards are met; responds to physical, virtual, and verbal member comment cards in a timely manner
  • Develops programming for special events and open houses, such as Fitness Jam and ARC 'til Dark welcome events
  • Collaborates with the marketing department to plan and execute promotional photography and videography of program offerings
  • Ensures all class cancellations are communicated promptly by contacting all participants/instructors along with posting notifications in the appropriate areas
  • Ensures facilities and equipment are safe to use; submits virtual FMX repair work orders if needed
  • Assists with development of operational procedures
  • Develops new wellness programs
  • Teaches group fitness classes and instructional classes
  • Assists others in department with special tasks as assigned


Instructional Responsibilities

  • Schedules, coordinates and oversees group fitness classes and academic classes for sports, dance, fitness and martial arts activities
  • Develops new classes and programs to meet the needs of a diverse campus community
  • Develops and implements clinics and classes
  • Ensures class instructors follow class expectations and policies
  • Develops class curriculum, skill development and learning outcomes for instructional classes
  • Teaches classes and substitutes for group fitness and instructional classes during instructor absences
  • Helps ensure all university requirements are met for academic classes


QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum & Preferred Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree required, in recreation, exercise science, physical education, kinesiology or related field from an accredited college or university preferred
  • Master's Degree preferred


Experience:

  • Two years of group fitness class instruction experience required (or two years Graduate Assistantship experience)
  • Two years supervisory/management experience required
  • Previous experience in a management/leadership position supervising instructors and administering fitness related recreation programs preferred
  • Experience in a college campus recreation environment preferred


License & Certification:

  • Nationally recognized group fitness certification from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), American Exercise Council (ACE), or an equivalent certification required
  • American Red Cross CPR, First Aid and AED certification required (within 30 days of hire)
  • American Red Cross CPR, First Aid and AED Instructor certification preferred

  • Ability to operate a computer, proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google (i.e. slides, sheets, docs) with the ability to learn and utilize new software programs
  • Ability to gather and organize data, draw logical conclusions and discern implications
  • Well organized, ability to effectively multi-task, ability to prioritize work, manage time, problem solve, make decisions and meet scheduled deadlines under pressure

SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS

This is a regular, full-time position with expected hours of Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Flexibility and willingness to work long and irregular hours and days, including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed by program schedule.

Work conditions may vary depending upon the location of programs; programs may occur indoors and outdoors, therefore requiring exposure to a variety of elements. While working indoors, the lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work performed within an office environment will include standard office equipment. While working outdoors, the work environment may involve exposure to various elements including but not limited to: sun, heat/cold, dust, pollens, precipitation, and other environmental risks.

Must be able to teach group fitness and other activity classes as well as train instructors in multiple formats.

Depending on program requirements, physical demands may require standing and walking for extended lengths of time and may require lifting, pushing, pulling, moving and carrying items up to 50 pounds (unassisted) and 75 pounds (with assistance).

  • Reports to the Fitness & Wellness Manager
  • Supervises Instructional staff
  • Provides work direction to Program Assistants
  • Works with all other Aztec Recreation staff
  • Works with A.S. Business Services staff


Outside the Organization

  • Works collaboratively and communicates with various University departments and personnel
  • Networks with other university programs, professional organizations and community entities to stay current with fitness and recreation industries as well as new programming ideas and trends for college students


EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY: Full-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt, Supervisor, Grade 5
