The Department of History is searching for an open-rank Teaching Professor of History in Modern Japan/East Asian Studies to join the department in Fall 2024. We are seeking highly motivated individuals committed to excellence in teaching. This is a non-tenure line, but continuing and tracked position (Assistant, Associate, and Full Teaching Professor), with the possibility of progressively longer multi-year (3 year and 5 year) contracts.

The successful candidate should have demonstrable teaching experience and be able to teach across the history and Global Asian curriculum, including small department seminars aimed at majors and large lecture courses taken by students across the university. Courses will include modern Japan as well as a lecture course on East Asian Studies. Preference will be given for track record teaching in one or more of the following subfields: environmental history, digital humanities, and/or public history.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the field of Modern Japanese History and Global Asian Studies. Graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses might be possible. The instructional load is three courses per semester for a total of six courses per academic year. The successful candidate will create course content and materials, and they will collaborate with colleagues to develop academic relationships within the university and the local community. Building relationships with students and service to the college and university are integral components of the position.

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in History, Asian Studies, or related field in hand by the appointment start date is required.
  • Evidence of teaching excellence, including student evaluations and sample course materials
  • Evidence of interdisciplinary expertise and capacity for collaboration across disciplines
  • Commitment to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Commitment to the continued development of Northeastern University's signature experiential learning model
