Campus Safety Supervisor

Summary:
Initiate and coordinate response to all emergencies. Direct, coordinate and perform a variety of duties to protect members of the University; to provide a high degree of security for University property, and that of students, employees and visitors. Supervise University security personnel during their tour of duty. Perform general patrol duties, follow-up investigations, coordinate training of new staff assigned to shift, coordinate and direct special events and other assignments. Oversee and assure orderly movement of traffic on campus.

Education/Experience:
High School diploma required, Bachelors degree preferred. Ten years of security, law enforcement or related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Past supervisory experience preferred. Experience at an institution of higher education preferred. Must be able to pass a criminal background investigation. Valid motor vehicle Drivers License with good driving record; must be insurable.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
  • Ability to supervise, direct, train, delegate, make logical decisions and coordinate special events/assignments on an as needed basis.
  • Knowledge of laws relating to the rights of suspects.
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures and practices used in the investigation and interview of complaints and alleged violations.
  • Knowledge of emergency response procedures, principles and techniques.
  • Ability to detect criminal activity, investigate crimes, collect legal evidence.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to write detailed accurate and administrative reports using Microsoft Word and E-mail.
  • Ability to act calmly, quickly and effectively in emergency situations, administer first aid, follow safety procedures and operate equipment, such as vehicles, radios.
  • Skill in providing protective services, building security and locking procedures and in basic Hazardous Materials Identification.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact in a courteous professional manner with the public, representatives of the legal system, Police Department personnel, University officials, faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
  • Ability to adapt to an often-changing work schedule which may include days, nights, weekends and a rotating schedule.
  • Ability to complete First Aid, CPR, AED operation, and related training courses.
  • Ability to attend court and other meetings as required.

Physical Requirements:
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objectives. Works in adverse weather conditions as needed. May be required to exert physical effort in restraining a violent or hostile individual(s) who are a threat to themselves or others. May be required to stand on foot post for long periods of time. May be required to run/sprint distances. Must be able to perform the following physical activities: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions, run/sprint distances, climb stairs/ladders and other physical activity as necessary in emergency situations. Must be able to meet requirements for a State issued drivers license. May be exposed to hazardous materials, chemicals, explosions or loud noises. May be required to drive a University vehicle for extended periods of time.


Essential Functions:
  • Direct and coordinate the duties of security officers. Initiates and coordinates response to all emergency calls including potentially violent or life-threatening situations. Supports personnel with unusual or difficult calls, assist, intervene and defuse crisis situations in a non-violent manner when possible. Coordinates immediate and temporary medical aid to injured or ill persons in emergency situations and responds to fire alarms and burglar alarms. Oversees investigation of incidents, crimes and accidents, minor and serious. Approves reports for all incidents and situations if not the reporting officer.
  • Coordinate and perform a variety of duties while patrolling assigned areas on foot, or in a vehicle, to protect lives and property of students, staff and visitors, and maintain peace. Provides safety escorts to the campus community and participates in other assignments using the Community Oriented policing philosophy. Builds a rapport with the students and employees. Becomes completely familiar with and ensures staff under supervision follow the Universitys Policies and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Enforce University rules and regulations. Assists security staff with their tasks, such as, investigating traffic accidents, checking vehicles for registration violations, issuing campus parking permits and parking tickets and review reports as necessary.
  • Provide training and supervision to new security staff, evaluates and approves all written reports and reports performance of all staff as directed by policy. Ensures that staff performs inspection of patrol vehicle before each shift, checks out department-issued equipment and other items necessary for tour of duty, and completes reports of maintenance problems.
  • Work special assignments, such as VIP visits, special events, athletic events, move-in, graduation, and other duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate the inspection of AED, first aid supplies, fire extinguishers, campus to detect safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, checks doors, and other unusual occurrences. Maintains radio contact with other University security staff and other staff in the course of their tour of duty
