Position Description

Situated on the ancestral homeland of the Tongva Peoples, Chaffey College is one of the oldest community colleges in California and serves a variety of communities, workforce partners, and students. While other community colleges are often named after their geographic area, Chaffey College is named after local innovator, George Chaffey, who, among other things, implemented street lights in the city of Ontario. To support the diverse needs of these populations and their intersections, the College has developed a variety of robust equity-driven efforts in and out of the classroom including the Center for Culture and Social Justice, Panther Care, Turning Point, Success Centers, GPS Centers, and BLOOM training.

Under direction, plan organize, coordinate, and supervise the District's grounds functions; train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; manage employee safety training programs for assigned staff; enforce appropriate safety practices and procedures; and perform related work as required. Note: Incumbents in this position are required to be on-call and may be required to work evening and weekend hours.

Responsibilities


  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise the District's grounds department; analyze needs and recommends improvements which maintain and enhance established standards;
  • Responsible for the maintenance of all athletic fields and District grounds areas and equipment;
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate the work of assigned employees;
  • Monitor and control pesticide usage in accordance with State laws and regulations;
  • Inspect grounds and enforce appropriate safety practices and procedures;
  • Establish standards for grounds maintenance and preventive maintenance;
  • Utilize a computerized work order management system;
  • Inspect District grounds and related equipment to determine necessary maintenance and repair, review work in progress to assure proper completion of work orders and contracts;
  • Monitor proper implementation of District water management programs;
  • Develop, monitor, and control expenditures within allocated annual budgets;
  • Communicate with vendors regarding the purchase of grounds supplies and equipment;
  • Respond to emergency calls, if needed; inspect site for damage and make necessary repairs or contact appropriate employee(s) or contractor(s) to correct the problem;
  • Maintain a variety of records pertaining to grounds maintenance;
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university;
  • A minimum of three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in grounds maintenance, preferably at a community college, including at least two (2) years in a lead or supervisory capacity;
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license;
  • Clear evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.
  • Possession of a current Qualified Applicator License (QAL)
Knowledge of:
  • Methods, materials, and equipment used in grounds maintenance;
  • Health and safety regulations and procedures;
  • State laws and regulations for pesticide usage and control;
  • District organization, operations, policies, and objectives;
  • Principles and practices of supervision and training;
  • Budget preparation and control;
  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies;
  • Oral and written communication skills.
Ability to:
  • Perform a variety of responsible duties related to the supervision of grounds maintenance services;
  • Plan, organize, schedule, assign, and review grounds work and projects;
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate assigned personnel;
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.


Additional Information


SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Working hours: Monday - Friday, 6:30am - 3:30pm. Positions in this classification may be required to work varied hours according to need.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT This is a full-time, 12-month position, Level IV, Range 8 of the Management Personnel Plan with a starting salary of Step A, $7,647month. Effective date of employment will be as soon as a successful candidate is selected and a mutually agreed upon date is determined. Excellent benefits include: health care, dental program, and vision services for employees and eligible dependents; employee life insurance; sick leave; and retirement coverage through the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).

Being able and ready to work in-person with Chaffey students, Chaffey employees, or other members of the Chaffey community/Chaffey partners/Chaffey contractors is an essential function of this job.

The Selection Process
