Job Summary/Basic Function:
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The HVAC/R Specialist works under the direct supervision of the HVAC/R Supervisor, within the Facilities Maintenance Department. The successful candidate shall be knowledgeable in repairing and servicing HVAC/R and associated equipment. Knowledge in electrical and plumbing, necessary to adequately diagnose/repair HVAC/R related equipment is expected. Responsibilities include servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing commercial industrial air handler and fan coil units, residential package units, gas-fired boilers, ice machines, and other associated equipment. The candidate must have the ability to work independently with minimal direction, must maintain a high level of customer service while performing assigned duties, and positively interact with students, faculty and staff in a professional manner. Employees are reminded that they represent both the department and the university and are expected to maintain a clean, neat and professional appearance while on duty. The candidate will routinely work with other crafts and will be required to monitor contracted work and provide training to subordinate employees.

ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEE:
Facilities Maintenance provides an important function to the Lamar University community. All personnel assigned to this department perform vital roles, and therefore carry the designation of Essential Employee and may be required to work beyond normal duty hours, to include weekends, holidays, and events of planned or unplanned campus closures or suspension of operations. Facilities Maintenance employees from all specialties are relied upon to mitigate emergencies that could adversely affect life, safety, health and loss of property. Therefore, it is important that all employees who work in Facilities Maintenance are aware that they could be requested to report to duty, based upon any given situation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Inspect, repair, modify and install HVAC/R equipment.
  • Conduct regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration, heating and ventilating units, including boilers, and air-conditioning equipment, and make necessary adjustments or repairs as required.
  • Repair or replace defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, including thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, high limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves, and automatic gas valves.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools, test equipment utilized in the trade and a motor vehicle; maintain equipment in effective and safe working condition
  • Maintain related records concerning time, labor and materials; maintain log of tasks performed and write reports as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned


    Minimum Qualifications:
    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education/Experience:
    High School Diploma or GED certificate.
    An Associate Degree or completion of a formal technical training program within the field of HVAC/R or related field is preferred. The combination of formal education and at least 3-years of experience may be accepted in lieu of a certified degree.
    A valid Texas drivers license is required.

    Knowledge and Abilities:
    Considerable knowledge of the HVAC/R trade and theory of HVAC/R systems.
    Materials, methods and tools used in the operation and repair of HVAC/R systems
    Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
    Understand and follow oral and written directions.
    Work cooperatively with others.
    Work independently with little direction.
    Meet schedules and timelines.
    Maintain excellent customer service.

    Manual/Physical:
    Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work. Some combination of climbing and balancing, to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights and working in confined spaces. May involve the lifting of moderately heavy objects, up to 70 pounds on an occasional basis. Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual and electrically powered tools.

    Communication:
    Ability to listen, communicate and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally and in writing. Develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with fellow employees and customers. Uses logic and reasoning to analyze, evaluate and exercise good judgment to make appropriate decisions.

    Environmental:
    Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, or toxic agents.
