*********** The Laboratory Technician for Biology performs a variety of technical, clerical and specialized duties related to the preparation, operations and maintenance of a student biology laboratory program; operates and demonstrates the use of specialized equipment and instructional materials; provides information and technical assistance to faculty and students; and performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

  • Assists in the operation and maintenance of an instructional laboratory and related areas; performs specialized and technical duties to assure efficient lab operations.
  • Prepares and maintains chemical solutions, media, biological specimens, bacterial cultures, reagents and other instructional materials and equipment for laboratory demonstrations and exercises.
  • Operates a variety of equipment typically found in physical/natural science laboratories.
  • Orders, receives and stores supplies, materials and equipment; maintains inventories, conducts catalog research and contacts vendors to purchase supplies and materials.
  • Prepares and maintains biology lab prep room, museum materials, outdoor areas assigned to Biology and/or supplies for the purpose of providing a clean, organized layout and safe work environment.
  • Maintains laboratory environment in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assures the safe and proper handling of chemicals and biological specimens.
  • Provides for proper disposal of waste materials in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Adjusts, maintains and performs minor repair to equipment; reports major repair needs according to established procedures.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. purchase orders, operating procedures for equipment, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
  • Supports instructors (e.g. setting up lab experiments, preparing Museum Observations, audio visual equipment, preparing chemicals, maintaining cadavers, media and cultures, etc.) for the purpose of complementing classroom instruction.
  • Trains and provides work direction to student and hourly workers as assigned; assists in coordinating laboratory duties and assignments.
  • Assists instructors in the use of a variety of equipment, materials and supplies in the instructional setting.


Requirements & Desirables
REQUIREMENTS
  1. Any combination equivalent to two years college level coursework from an accredited institution in a related field and two years responsible experience working with the public or working in a laboratory setting. Additional years of education may be considered in lieu of the experience required; OR
  2. Two years of college-level chemistry, biology and microbiology courses, OR
  3. Community College and/or Vocational School Degree with study in microbiology; and
  4. Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, disabilities and learning styles of community college students and staff.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate degree in biological science
  • Experience in maintaining cultures, live animals and plants
  • Experience in maintenance of equipment
  • Experience in cell and molecular labs

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: (Desirable Attributes & Skills)
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math including calculation of fractions, percents and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents and solve practical problems. Basic principles with aseptic procedures and techniques used in science laboratories. Health and safety practices and precautions applicable to science laboratories. A wide variety of equipment and materials used in science laboratories. Fundamentals of laboratory organization and management. Oral and written communication skills. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: handling hazardous materials and using MSDS information and culturing bacteria fungi; preparing chemical solutions, water cultures of small plants and invertebrates, fresh or preserved plant, animal and fungal specimens or parts for labs and prepare displays for classrooms; maintains classroom aquaria and terraria; greenhouse plants, and aquatic organisms in pool and have understanding of biological classifications systems.

SKILLS are required to perform multiple technical tasks with an occasional need to upgrade skills due to changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating equipment used in biology lab; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications. Use of new or additional equipment brought about by new technology shall be incorporated consistent with the level of responsibility and complexity of this job.

ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities; gather collate, and/or classify data; and coordinate a significant number of factors in the use of equipment and supplies. Flexibility is required to work with others under a variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and use equipment for a variety of purposes under different conditions that requires an understanding of various methods of operation. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; and utilize a wide variety of job related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues, create plans of action and reach solutions. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with constant interruptions. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, disabilities and learning styles of community college students and staff.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:
  1. In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  2. Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
  3. California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
  4. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency. WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: lifting and stacking objects up to 50 pounds occasionally, and frequently exert 10 to 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Work involves sitting, walking, standing, stooping, climbing stairs, reaching, twisting and turning, bending at the waist; hearing and speaking to communicate and provide information to others; possess the manual dexterity to operate computers and related equipment. Work exposes incumbent to toxic, pathogenic, or otherwise irritating substances and chemicals and requires the use of protective devices.

NOTE: The College is closed on Fridays during the summer period, when the work schedule may change according to departmental needs.

SALARY INFORMATION
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Salary Range: CSEA 115
Starting Salary Range: $4,579.25 to $5,047.25 per month (Step 1 to 3). Normal entering step is Step 1.

Employees in classifications represented by the California School Employees' Association (CSEA) Chapter 196 and are required to comply fully with the CSEA/Marin Community College District (MCCD) Collective Bargaining Agreement, including payment of union dues or charitable contributions. CSEA employees are also members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), to which the member contributes up to 7% of his/her reportable compensation on a monthly basis.
