Job Description:

This is a part-time, non-exempt, 52 weeks per year position, 25 hours per week, Friday - Sunday from 10:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m.

Organizational Function and Responsibilities:
This position assists in maintaining the safety and security operations of the District. The Public Safety Officer performs general and shift specific safety and security duties in and around all physical campus facilities within the District and works with staff to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, staff, and visitors. This position maintains order through effective patrol, incident response and management and proper follow-up during his/her respective shift and throughout the district. This employee will work independently most of the time. Significant judgment and decision making ability is required.
This position reports to the Deputy Director.

Essential Duties:
The following duties are typically expected of this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

1. Provides patrol and incident response for general security and safety for campuses, and responds to all non-emergency and emergency incidents on campus and within the district as needed.
2. Provides weekly and monthly shift coverage as needed to ensure that all posts and assignments are covered.
3. Ensures that all pertinent information is disseminated from one's shift and that oncoming shift personnel know what incidents, duties and other assigned tasks are to be handled.
4. Participates in comprehensive training to remain current on new security measures and events.
5. Follows through to completion on all directions or special assignments in a timely manner as directed by leadership.
6. Patrols all campus buildings, perimeter and parking areas. Inspects for safety violations, fire hazards, and checks for leaks (water and gas). Examines perimeter doors, stairwell doors, and secured area doors for proper operation and security integrity. Examines motion detectors and other alarm devices to ensure working order.
7. Responds to all calls for service and collects all relevant information needed to complete and file written reports and other in incident situations and other documentation in a timely manner. Also expected to initiate contacts with violators of Federal, State and/or local laws and Madison College Code of Conduct whenever violations are witnessed and proper actions taken.
8. Responds to and assesses medical incidents, administers CPR and first aid if appropriate, and notifies the proper authorities if external assistance is required.
9. Assists with escorting person(s) from the building when appropriate.
10. Completes special assignments in a timely manner as designated by the Deputy Director or Director.
11. Makes responsible and effective directives with regard to public safety issues in the absence of the Director.
12. Attends all mandatory public safety training programs, department meetings, and other training as directed by the Deputy Director or Director.
13. Recommends operational improvements to public safety operations and systems as directed by the Deputy Director.
14. Demonstrates a commitment to Madison College's mission, vision and values.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Working knowledge of Wisconsin Law, City of Madison Ordinances, Madison College Policies and Procedures, Student Rights and Responsibilities, security and fire alarm systems, and access control systems.
2. Working knowledge of computerized security and access control systems with the ability to respond to emergency situations and incidents.
3. Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of various security programs.
4. Knowledge of current public safety regulations and student code of conduct policies commonly associated with public post-secondary educational facilities.
5. Actively support all Public Safety and various security policies and procedures to guarantee a safe and welcoming environment for all.
6. Ability to operate networked personal computer and software applications such as Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office applications, and the ability to readily learn software applications specific to Madison College and the department of Public Safety.
7. Demonstrated skill in multi-tasking, prioritizing, scheduling, crowd control, emergency, incident management, written and verbal communication and basic math skills.
8. Ability to understand and operate CCTV systems, fire and intrusion alarms with graphical user interfaces, camera multiplexers and video recorders, and access card readers.
9. Ability to provide consistent customer service improvement to make all visitors feel welcome and appreciated.
10. Ability to maintain confidentiality is essential.
11. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others, especially with students and coworkers having diverse socioeconomic and racial backgrounds.
12. Ability to solve practical problems with little supervision; ability to follow directives and procedures and to know how to apply them as intended.
13. Ability to think and make accurate decisions quickly in emergency situations and to multitask.
14. Ability to plan workload accordingly in order to meet established deadlines without supervision.
15. CPR (adult, child, infant) and basic standard first aid training is required. Blood borne pathogen training is required.
16. Must be a team player, yet possess the ability to work independently; excellent character traits such as reliability, honesty and trustworthiness are essential; must have the ability to meet a varied work schedule, including necessary overtime as offered and/or directed.
17. Ability to stand for long periods; handle or feel, reach with hands and arms. Required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, see, talk and hear. Occasionally required to walk through dark areas. Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, blood borne pathogens, external weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock. Noise level in the work environment in usually moderate to loud.
18. Able to occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds or greater.
19. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Qualifications:
1. Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
OR
2. 60 College Credits from an accredited institution and completion of a state law enforcement academy.
3. Adult CPR with First Aid and Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) certification or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.
4. Possess a Concealed Carry license from the State of Wisconsin Department of Regulations and Licensing or the ability to obtain such licensing within 60 days of employment.
